At the invitation of Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G. L. Peiris, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh visited Sri Lanka and attended the unveiling ceremony of President Ho Chi Minh's statue in Colombo from 24-26 November 2013. During his stay, the Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister held meetings with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne and Speaker of Parliament Chamal Jayantha Rajapaks, and talks with Foreign Minister G. L. Peiris.
During their meetings and talks, the two sides shared the view that more exchanges and meetings at all levels should be held; existing cooperation mechanisms such as the joint committees, political consultations maintained, sub-committees for cooperation such specific areas as trade soon established; concluded agreements implemented; conditions for their enterprises to do business in each other’s country, especially in tea production and processing in Viet Nam and the exploration and supply of oil products in Sri Lanka be created. The two sides also agreed to raise two-way trade value to US$1 billion by 2015, to strengthen their cooperation in multilateral forums. The both sides reaffirmed their consistent policy to attach great importance to their traditional friendship to further improve their multifaceted cooperation.
